Nityānanda Trayodaśī: the appearance of Nityānanda Prabhu

The day of Nityānanda, Caitanya’s closest companion and mercy in person.

What is celebrated

Nityānanda Prabhu appeared in the village of Ekacakrā, in Bengal, a few years before Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He was His inseparable companion, and together they took the chanting of God’s names throughout the region. On altars they always appear side by side: Gaura and Nitāi.

The tradition teaches that Nityānanda is Balarāma, Krishna’s elder brother, and that He represents the original spiritual master. He is remembered above all for His compassion: He gave the love of God without looking at who received it, even to those who had attacked Him.

How it is celebrated

  • Devotees fast until noon.
  • His pastimes are read and songs are sung in His honour.
  • At noon ārati and a feast are held.

In 2026 it falls on 30 January 2026, according to the calendar calculated for London. In 2027 it will be on 19 February 2027. Vaishnava dates follow the moon and change every year: check them in the calendar. Each temple organises its own programme; ask at your nearest one.
